In 1993 the very first Primary School League Tournament was hosted by the club - the idea borne out of the desire to promote GAA in our local schools with classes from 3rd-6th taking part. The first games took place on May 11th 1993, with 18 teams taking part from Scoil Realt na Mara, St Patricks & St Brendans Loughshinny.
The effort to ensure this inaugural tournament was a success was immense, with the then Juvenile Chairman Bobby Walsh, Tournament organisers Tom Weir (RIP), Ger O'Donoghue & Pat Durkan supported by the club executive, Chairman Hugh McCrory & the teachers from the participating schools. At that time the belief was that this was only the beginning of promoting and growing GAA in the local community and when we look at where we are today , this has been achieved & the popularity of our national games continues to grow in the local area.
Today, as our 30th year of the tournament culminates in the much anticipated finals day, we have had over 400 kids take part over the last 6 weeks, with lots of fun, laughter and some great skill on display. The PSL is open to all children in our local schools, irrespective of whether they are existing club players/members.
The tournament continues to be volunteer led, with our young coaches in place to "manage" teams, and our young referees officiating all organised by the volunteer committee.
The club executive would like to thank the many volunteers (too many to mention individually) who have worked tirelessly since 1993 to grow this tournament in our community and ensure that the kids taking part make memories to last a lifetime at the Harps!
THANK YOU ALL!!!
